Travel and Accommodation

Getting to Utrecht:

Schiphol: The nearest airport is Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, accessible with most major airlines. There is a train station located directly below the airport, with trains traveling to Utrecht every 15 minutes (direction Heerlen or Nijmegen, normally leaving from track 1 or 2). The (intercity train) trip takes approximately 30 minutes, and costs 8.70 euros.

Eindhoven: Another nearby airport is the Eindhoven airport, which is connected to other (mostly European) cities by a number of budget airlines, for example RyanairWizzair, and Transavia. The trip from Eindhoven airport to Utrecht Central requires both bus and train, and takes approximately an hour and fifteen minutes. Buses 400 and 401 are located at the airport, and take you directly to Eindhoven Station. From Eindhoven Station, there is a direct train to Utrecht Central (direction Schiphol or Amsterdam Centraal), which travels every 15 minutes. The total cost is 16.50 euros.

Planning: To plan travel from the airport to Utrecht Centraal station, see 9292.nl/en, with bus, train, tram, and metro travel advice. For only train advice, see www.ns.nl/en. See also the following 9292 website for more travel advice on getting from the airports of the Netherlands (also including Rotterdam AirportMaastricht Airport, and Groningen Airport) to the cities.

Trains: Utrecht is also connected to other countries with its train system. See www.nsinternational.nl/en to book an international train ticket.

A note on train travel: Domestic train travel requires the use of a chip card. You can either purchase a single-use chip card, which is valid for a one-way or return trip, or an OV-chip card, which can also be used on trams, buses, and the metro. You can read more about the different types of cards here. Single-use chip cards can be purchased at the blue and yellow NS ticket machines, or at the NS Ticket and Service desks. They are valid only on the date purchased, and require a 1 euro supplementary fee. An OV-chip card can be purchased at NS ticket machines with an OV-chipkaart logo. They require a one-time fee of 7.50 euros. Once you have your chip card, you use it to check in and out at train stations, which involves swiping the chip card past a card reader both when arriving at a train station, and again, when leaving the train station. (The same check in / check out process applies on trams, buses, and the metro if using an OV-chip card.)
